Andrea Baraldi

Andrea Baraldi received his Laurea (M.S.) degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 1989; an M.S. in Software Engineering from the University of Padova, Italy, and Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, in 1994; a post-doctoral fellowship in Artificial Intelligence at the International Computer Science Institute, Berkeley, CA, in 1999. The research activity of Eng. Baraldi is mainly focused on the development of operational automatic spaceborne image understanding systems. These comprise an operational automatic multi-sensor multi-resolution pixel-specific spectral rule-based decision-tree preliminary classification first stage in series with a battery of second-stage context-sensitive application- and sensor-specific stratified feature extractors and one-class classification modules. Wherever possible these computer vision systems search for biological plausibility as a value added.

An operational automatic spaceborne image understanding system works as one processing block of a spaceborne information processing feedback system. Such a feedback system provides a feedback link to first-stage automatic remote sensing image enhancement modules, such as automatic image topographic correction, automatic panchromatic sharpening of multi-spectral imagery, automatic image mosaic enhancement, etc. It also includes landscape fragmentation/connectivity analysis tools to be employed as input by ecosystem and land use modeling systems. Additional research interests of Eng. Baraldi deal with machine learning, with special emphasis on self-organizing topology-preserving inductive-learning distributed systems capable of modeling non-stationary random processes.

Eng. Baraldi held research fellowships at the Italian national Research Council (1989, 1994-1996, 2003-2004), European Space Agency (1991-1993), International Computer Science Institute, Berkeley, CA (1997-1999), Institute for Environment and Sustainability of the European Commission’s Joint Research Center (EC-JRC) (2000-2002, 2005-2009). In 2009 he founded Baraldi Consultancy in Remote Sensing. Since Sept. 2010 he has joined the Department of Geography of the University of Maryland as Research Associate Professor. Eng. Baraldi served as Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks from 2001 to 2006.
