Centre for Research and Technology Hellas
The Informatics and Telematics Institute (ITI)
was founded in Thessaloniki, in 1998, as a non-profit organization, under
the auspices of the General Secretariat of Research and Technology, of the
Greek Ministry of Development. In the year 2000 it became one of the
founding members of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH).
The Institute operates according to the private law. The Director of the
Institute is Professor Maria Petrou.
ITI employs 7 Researchers and more than 100
post-doctors and post-graduate research staff. ITI has excellent research
facilities, with a network of computers and virtual reality equipment. It
has participated to more than 50 European and more than 85 Greek projects.
It has worked in Image Processing and Computer Vision, with applications in
remote sensing, 3D face recognition, gait recognition, behavioural
biometrics, knowledge engineering from multimedia, 3D database search,
e-learning, electronic gate tools, systems for helping people with special
needs, knowledge management systems, e-government, applications of virtual
reality for training visually impaired people, integrated solutions for
people with mobility problems, 3D television and others. For more

Maria Petrou
"Professor Maria Petrou was lost to cancer
in October 2012. Our project is dedicated to her, great scientist and
friend."
Maria Petrou studied Physics at the
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Mathematics in Cambridge University
and received her PhD in Astronomy and her DSc in Engineering, both from the
University of Cambridge. She has published more than 400 scientific papers
on Astronomy, Pattern recognition, Image Processing and Computer Vision,
with applications to Biomedicine and Remote Sensing. She has worked on
several European projects on Remote Sensing, dealing with mixed pixel
classification, reasoning with uncertainty and image processing. She has
co-authored two books on Image Processing: “Image processing, the
fundamentals” (1999, 2nd edition 2010) and “Image Processing, dealing with
texture” (2006), both published by Wiley. She is a Fellow of the Royal
Academy of Engineering (UK), the Director of the Informatics and Telematics
Institute (CERTH, Greece) and the Chair of Signal Processing, Imperial
College London.
Zisis
Petrou
Zisis Petrou has an MEng from the
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki, Greece and an MSc from the International Space
University in Strasbourg, France. He has worked on website development at
the Department of Applied Informatics, Tomas Bata University, Zlin, Czech
Republic, on Remote Sensing applications, at the German Remote Sensing Data
Center (DFD), German Aerospace Center (DLR), Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, and
on 3D object Search & Retrieval, at the Informatics and Telematics
Institute, Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, Thessaloniki, Greece.
His scientific interests are in Remote Sensing and Earth Observation
applications, in Computer Vision and Image processing. He is native Greek
speaker, while he speaks English, French and Italian.
Vasiliki
Κosmidou
Vasiliki Κosmidou received her MEng and PhD
in Telecommunications from the Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2004 and 2010,
respectively. While doing her PhD at the Aristotle University she acted as a
teaching assistant to Professor Panas and Dr Hadjileontiadis, for the
courses “Digital Signal Processing”, “Stochastic Signals”, and “Signals and
Systems”. She also worked on various projects funded by COSMOTE, the Greek
government and EU, contributing to project management, signal processing,
data analysis, pattern recognition and experiment design. She is currently a
post-doctor at the Informatics and Telematics Institute (ITI) of the Centre
for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH).
Ioannis
Manakos
Ioannis Manakos has been working and
cooperating with academicians and researchers throughout Europe and North
Africa the last 17 years. He is the Chairman of the European Association of
Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL). He has involved in numerous
international competitive projects for more than a decade. Activity topics
concerned GMES, Space, Airborne and In situ Remote Sensing, Environmental
Resources Management, Soil Erosion Risk Assessment, Agricultural Practices
Monitoring, Management of Mediterranean Ecosystems, and Tourism; all
addressed under the perspective of geospatial data handling.Over 60
publications have appeared as papers in International Journals, Symposia,
Workshops, and as Books by him.
